Overcast rainy season isn't conducive to making salt. Level Contributor 9,002 posts 57 reviews 34 helpful votes 2. Re Hon Khoi Salt Field 5 years ago Yes not really a good time to visit. 3 posts 3. Re Hon Khoi Salt Field 5 years ago Hi, I am planning to visit Hon Khoi Salt Farm in March and would love to meet with a salt farmer. Would anyone please be able to help? Many thanks, Demi Level Contributor 3,509 posts 7 reviews 2 helpful votes 6. Re Hon Khoi Salt Field 5 years ago Most of them if not all are employees, not farmers per se. The companies aren't happy if you come close. If you go here You'll get very close and might be able to chat with some of them. You'll need an interpreter of you don't speak Vietnamese. Edited 5 years ago Level Contributor 53 posts 7. Re Hon Khoi Salt Field 5 years ago The companies aren't happy if you come close. Yes right . They do business, you come to see their business without money. What happens ? money can solve all problem but you should find a right person who can help you to be close to the employees there. Not many people know. On the way to Doc Let Beach people can take photos of salt fields free but certainly no salt. Rarely can you see salt there. If you have an interpreter who asks the security guards for persmission and then give the security guards some money, they will be very happy to allow you to come in the company on the left on the way to Doc Let Beach to take photos of salt fields. If more money, employees will play a role collecting salt so that you can take photos like the so called sunrise photograph tours . Imagine very very nice photos of employees collecting salt by rakes and carrying 2 baskets full of salt on their shoulders wading in salty water and then making loads of salt at sunrise. On 10th December , you can see that scene in that area if you pay the security guards well. Everything should be well prepared and it requires a good cooperation with the chief of the employees. You need the cellphone number of the chief of the employees there. A wholeheartedly recommended guide about this has the cellphone number. Any other people know ? You leave Nha Trang at 4 am. You reach there at 5 am for sunrise. Know that all employees there work at fixed time not anytime. Can anyone can give a good advice to tourists ? No, No, No salt but in fact YES . Re Hon Khoi Salt Field 5 years ago In my experience the best photos in that area are late afternoon photos unless you're at the very tip of the peninsula. The fields closest to Nha Trang are about 30 km away the more interesting once about 50 and then again 70 km. Plan to be on location half an hour before. Shooting salt pictures in the middle of the day makes for uninteresting pictures because of the sun. Most of my pictures in the area were shot at about 6 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon when the shadows are long. As you'll find out B&W photos probably make the nicest images. If you're serious about it go scout the day before so you'll know where to go. Edited 5 years ago Level Contributor 53 posts 9. Re Hon Khoi Salt Field 5 years ago There 's another salt field on the way to the airport . After passing by Mia Resort, you will find a roundabout, turn right to the national high way and then turn left. Drive further, you will find a salt field on the left. The employees here are more friendly but if you don't contact them in advance, rarely can you see them at work. Level Contributor 2 posts 4 reviews 7 helpful votes 10. Re Hon Khoi Salt Field 5 years ago My daughter and I just returned from Nha Trang two days ago. We booked our private tour to Hon Khoi salt mine through etripster with an amazingly cheap price of USD54 per pax as compared to other tour agents which quoted us USD115 per pax covering similar itinerary which included a Vietnamese lunch which was good. We were pleasantly surprised that the local agent picked us up with a luxurious 7 seated mpv albeit it was just two of us. It came with a driver and an English speaking guide. We were picked up at 6am original pick up time was supposed to be 7am as to reduce exposure to the scorching hot sun. The journey was abt an hour ride. Along the journey, they stopped briefly for us to take some photos of fishermen rowing their basket boats. When we arrived the salt mine, the guide led us into the various plots where workers were doing their respective chores and we had ample opportunity to take photos. After the visit, they took us for a brief stopover at Doc Let beach before heading back to the city. As we arrived back to the city ahead of schedule and was too early for lunch restaurant only open at 1030 am while we were back at 930am, the guide was so kind to bring us to two other places of interests which were not part of the original iti ie Po Nagar Cham Temple and Hon Chong Promontory Rocks. Totally no regrets and highly recommend to sign up with etripster. Note that salt mining is only done during summer months from March till July. Around 750,000 tonnes of salt are produced between January and June each year. The production is to limited these months because strong sunshine and temperature of up to 40 Degrees Celsius are needed in the production process. So if you are planning to visit you need to visit during these months as at other times of the year there is nothing to see. To reach the Hon Khoi Salt Fields from Nha Trang you could hire your own car or motorbike and drive yourself there and back, or alternatively hire a taxi which will cost you around 500,000 VND for a one way journey approximately $22 USD and more for getting the the driver to wait and take you back. A cheaper option is to travel up the day before on a public bus to Doc Let beach, the northern end of which is 850 metres walking distance from the Hon Khoi Salt Fields, and stay the night in Doc Let ready for an early start the next morning. Public bus services from Nha Trang to Doc Let beach depart from Nguyen Thien Thuat Street in centre of Nha Trang’s tourist district. The bus you need is a yellow and blue bus, which is marked with a number 3 on the front of the bus and has a sign above the front window saying “Nha Trang=Ninh Hoa=Doc Let”. The fare is 24,000 VND one way and the journey takes around 90 minutes. Hon Khoi Salt Fields near Nha TrangHon Khoi Salt Fields are basically large shallow pools dug into the ground near the coast. Sea water is pumped into the pools and left to evaporate in the hot sun for around 10 days leaving behind a residue of salt. The process of collecting the salt is done by hand traditionally by middle aged ladies who wear conical hats, masks, gloves and thick over shirts to protect them from the hot sun. The salt is carefully shovelled from the salt pools in woven baskets which are attached to either end of a bamboo pole. From the pools the salt is transported to larger piles of salt ready for collection. This is very hard work for which the people who do it get paid very little the equivalent of around $160 per month. There is, however, something very beautiful about the salt fields with the brilliant white of the enormous piles of salt looking similar to snow, and the rhythmic work of the ladies collecting salt from the fields and depositing it from their baskets. Lots of people come here to take photographs as a of the Hon Khoi Salt FieldsThe Hon Khoi Salt Fields are located km by road from Nha Trang Railway Station. busentrance feehon khoinha trangopening hourssalt fieldstaxi
